There are some books that make you feel a little like you’re sinking back into simpler times. Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke is one of those for me. I found it in my new secondary school library, a newly minted year 7, eleven years old. A book about dragons!
It’s quite simple really, there are a colony of dragons living in the Scottish Highlands, with the Brownies that survive off moonlight. When their valley home is threatened by humans, one of the dragons and his Brownie Bestie go off to find the home of the dragons, the Rim of Heaven. Along the way they narrowly miss humans in cities, pick up a human book and a homoculus, go to Egypt, somewhere else besides and end up in the Himilayan mountains. All the while, they meet a variety of fantastic creatures, a professor, and are being chased by a gold armoured dragon.
It’s great fun. I had such a wonderful time re-reading this after so many years. Yes, it’s very kuch a children’s book – good vs evil, and humanity thrown in. A prophecy. Some feuds. Found families ect. And dragons and brownies and dwarves. It was a recipe for instant love when I was a kid, and I still love it even after a fairly lengthy hiatus. In fact it’s one of the few books I actively remember reading when I was a kid!
Another nostalgia read for me is The Secret Countess by Iva Ibbotson. I read that book so many times! I was the only person who took it out of the library I think. They bought the rest of Ibbotson’s books because of me. That kinda sums me up really – Dragons and Romance. Which is quite entertaining considering my favourite reads of 2019 was The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon which is dragons AND romance.
What books do you remember reading as a child? One that fills you with such a sense of nostalgia?
