Recently, I have been finding it a little hard to focus on new books, books I haven’t read before. Even books that I’ve been dying to read, I find that a few pages in I’ve turned back to Warehouse 13, Doctor Who reruns, Emma ect. I just assumed that I was in a bit of a reading slump and started trying to come up with things to fill my blog schedule.
I have read one book since I came back from my holiday – that was two and a half weeks ago. I have read one book. For me, this is a slippery slide to a slump.
Then I decided to start re-reading A Darker Shade of Magic while organising my bookshelves (do people ever actually achieve Full Bookshelf Organisation? I always decide to start reading something halfway through organisation and then it never gets finished…). I actually read the whole book in one sitting, loving it just as much the second time around as I did the first.
Huzzah! I thought, and returned to Legendary, to The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock and other books I’d tried to start and the same lack of motivation happened again. Seriously? I have 14 books on my bedside table right now, plus four or five I bought on a “start the series” sale for Kindle. I have plenty of new things to read. Clearly the slump wasn’t quite through with me.
Then, today, I received a paperback copy of the long way to a small angry planet and I wanted to start re-reading straight away. Thinking about it, I want to re-read Six of Crows, the Shades of Magic trilogy, and other series I loved before.
I just don’t want to read new things. As much as I want to re-read all these favourites, I am afraid they would make for a boring blog. I’m going to try and alternate so I read one new book and re-read an old one to try and mitigate this desire to re-read all the books I’ve loved before (sounds like a YA title I would actually adore – forget all the boys I’ve loved )
Am I just making things up? Does it count as a reading slump (for blogging purposes) if you just want to re-read and it’s not making any sort of dent in your TBR pile? What are your best tips for managing a book slump?
